Shirley Willey
Shirley Mekshes Willey, 78, of Bettendorf, died Thursday, Nov. 28, 2002, at the home of her daughter in Bettendorf.
Born Feb. 15, 1924, in Davenport, she was the daughter of Herman and Nettie Pohlman Beckmann. On July 20, 1947, she married John Mekshes. He died June 25, 1984. On Nov. 27, 1993, she married Donald D. Willey in Bettendorf. He died Oct. 25, 2001.
Mrs. Willey worked for Hickey Brothers in Davenport, Eagles Grocery in Bettendorf, National Tea Co. in Davenport, and retired from Randall's Grocery in Davenport.
She was a member of United Food and Commercial Workers Union Local No. 431 of Davenport, Duck Creek Ladies Golf Club and Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary Post 9128 of Bettendorf.
Survivors include three daughters, Pamela Glynn and Marsha Collins, both of Bettendorf, and Gail White of Owensboro, Ky.; one son, Steven Mekshes of Sycamore, Ill.; nine grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; one brother, Mort Beckman of Webster, Wis.; and a son-in-law, Gene VanDeWoestyne of Burlington.
Besides her husbands, she was preceded in death by her parents, one daughter, one sister and one son-in-law.
The funeral for Mrs. Willey was Tuesday at McGinnis, Chambers & Sass Funeral Chapel in Bettendorf, with the Rev. Erwin Swanson officiating. Burial was in Rock Island National Cemetery in Rock Island, Ill.
A memorial has been established.
