Dorothy Irene Coffey Smith, 99, Peculiar, Missouri passed away on April 6, 2017 at her winter home in Tampa, Florida surrounded by the love of her family. A celebration of her life will be held on May 27th at First Baptist Church of Peculiar with visitation at 10 am and service at 11 am. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to the Peculiar Thrift Shop, First Baptist Church of Peculiar or Floyd and Dorothy Smith Scholarship at Ottawa University, Ottawa, KS.

Dorothy was born February 28, 1918 in Humeston, Iowa, the 10th child of Newton and Gertrude Coffey. She is survived by her 6 children: Karen Smith, Peculiar, Mo, Vivian Smith (Alan Tillman), Austin, TX, Judith Withrow, Peculiar, MO; David Smith (Barbara), Olathe, KS; Linda Berube (Ernest), Kansas City, MO; and Tim Smith, Tampa, FL; 6 grandchildren: Jevette Link (David), Overland Park, KS, Laura Everett (James), Shawnee, KS, Lisa Ogle (Travis), Belton, Mo, Greg Smith (Genesis), Tampa, FL, Andrew Smith, Tampa, FL, and Robyn Withrow, Peculiar, Mo; 11 great grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband of 56 years Floyd Alfred Smith on August 1, 1997, her parents, and her brothers and sisters: Carl, William, Leo, Opal, Mildred, Carol, Velma, Erma, and Raymond, and Erma.

After graduating from high school she attended Moody Bible Institute in Chicago, Illinois. She married Floyd Alfred Smith on August 5, 1941. While raising her 6 children, she served as a pastor’s wife in small American Baptist churches in Iowa, Nebraska, and Kansas. During that time she continued to pursue her college degree at Fort Hays State University, Kansas Wesleyan, and UMKC. She obtained her BA in Elementary Education at UMKC in 1968. She taught at Peculiar Elementary for several years and later worked in the Cass County area for the West Central Missouri Community Action Agency. Her last project for them was teaching with home head start. After retirement she volunteered as manager of the Peculiar Thrift shop where she continued to provide support and assistance to those in need in the community. She was a Sunday school teacher at the First Baptist Church in Peculiar and lived her life as a woman of faith and lived the golden rule. She opened her home, pocketbook, and heart to those in need. She showered love on all those whose lives she touched and was loved by all who knew her.
