Please join the BBFI Missionary Family in praying for Ann and the family as we all mourn the death of this godly husband, father and friend to all.
A memorial service will be held at Cherry Street Baptist Church,
Springfield, Missouri Monday, May 15, at 11AM.
Robert Dean Baird was born on August 12, 1933 in the small Texas panhandle town of Hereford, Tx to Kay and Maybelle Baird. Robert, known by most as Bob, moved at an early age along with his brothers, Richard and Kay Hugh, to Amarillo, Tx. He attended school in Amarillo and graduated from Amarillo High in 1951. While in high school he made the greatest discovery of his life when he fell in love and eventually married a classmate Margaret Ann Roberts. The two were married in 1953. As the young couple settled in Amarillo they were visited one day by Pastor Mo Garner from Grace Baptist Church and this encounter dramatically altered the course of their lives forever. It was at Grace that they began a life long partnership with Baptist Bible Fellowship pastors and churches.
Bob was successful in his early business life, eventually transferring with Utility Equipment Company to Little Rock Arkansas where he set sales records and was quickly promoted to Vice President of sales for the southern region of the company. While in Little Rock the Baird's attended Twelfth Street Baptist Church and it was there under the tutelage of Pastor Jim Phillips, that Bob felt the call to leave his lucrative business life and enter the gospel ministry.
In 1966 the family moved to Springfield, Mo. Bob enrolled at Baptist Bible College where he served as the 1969 class president. It was while in college that Bob and his family joined High Street Baptist Church and Bob, after graduation, worked with one of his life mentors Dr. David Cavin at High Street. It was during a mission conference at High Street that Filipino missionary Bob Hughes impacted Bob and Ann's life forever as they surrendered their lives to missionary service. Although never having traveled outside the US, the Baird family embarked on a career and ministry path that would last 50 years and encompass every region of the world.
Dr Baird and his faithful wife Ann served for 5 years as missionaries to Jamaica, 4 years as Assistant Missions Director for the BBFI, 5 years as Pastor at Hallmark Baptist Church in Fort Worth, Tx, and almost 20 years as Mission Director of the Baptist Bible Fellowship International. This was the leadership position God had been preparing Dr Baird for his entire life and he served in that capacity with passion, wisdom, and success. His missionary service took him to almost every country in the world as the BBFI enjoyed unparalleled success growing to almost 1,000 overseas personnel and processing tens of millions of dollars annually in missions giving. In recognition of his achievements he was awarded 5 honorary Doctorates from educational institutions around the world.
Beyond his great passion to serve his Lord and Savior, Dr Baird also enjoyed bird watching, fishing the scenic streams of the Ozarks, and playing golf. His passion for ministry was obvious and compelling, however the greatest joy of his life was his family. He was married to his best friend Ann for almost 64 years who was a wonderful wife, mother, ministry partner, and faithful caregiver during these last years of declining health. They have one daughter Deana Young who served as a counselor in the Springfield school district for many years and along with her husband Raymond have ministered to the marginalized youth of Springfield in at-risk neighborhoods for almost 40 years. They have a daughter Megan Keller and her husband Chris, who have two children Truitt and Eloise, all of Springfield. The Baird's son Sandy and his wife Karen are directors of an international mission agency New Hope Initiative and Sandy serves as the Pastor at North Park Baptist Church in Houston, Tx. The Baird's have 2 children, Kyle and his wife Kelsey and their son Beckett of Austin, Tx and a daughter Ava and her husband Daniel Darnell and son Ezekiel also of Austin.
Dr Baird was preceded in death by his parents and brothers.
He will be greatly missed by his loving family but his life of meaning and purpose will be eternally celebrated by pastors, missionaries, national leaders, and grateful individuals whose lives were impacted for the gospel through the enormous legacy that Dr Baird left behind.
Funeral services will be at 11:00 a.m. Monday, May 15, 2017, at Cherry Street Baptist Church, 1201 South Oak Grove Avenue, Springfield, Mo. Burial will follow in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens.
