John Stewart, 82, of Ocala, Florida, passed away, Thursday, May 11, 2017 at the Legacy House at the Hospice of Marion County.

John was born in 1934 in Geneva, Georgia to John A. Stewart II and Katie (Stinson) Stewart. He was raised in Thomasville, Georgia and attended Memphis University where he met and married the former Jean Ann Stockdale.

John entered the USAF during the Korean War as part of the cadet class of N55. John taught flying for many years and was an Air Commando in the Vietnam War. He progressed through the ranks and retired after twenty years as a Lt. Colonel. He then was employed with the USPS and was President of Florida NAPUS and of the Lions Club in Keystone Heights. John retired as the Post Master of Silver Springs after 23 years. He enjoyed giving back to his community and was a regular volunteer at Hospice of Marion County. He was an elder at Fort King Presbyterian Church and loved singing in the choir, helping to maintain the property and spending time with his fellow parishioners.

John is survived by his wife of 62 years Jeannie of Ocala, FL, and his two children, Fred Stewart of Ocala, Florida and Catherine Lowe of Round Rock, Texas and two grandchildren, John Conner Lowe and Katie Lowe of Round Rock, Texas and his niece Diane Woods Baker of Houston, Texas, as well as many Stinson cousins in Gainesville, Florida. He also leaves behind his beloved pet Pearl.

He was preceded in death by his sister Betty Jean Woods.

A burial service will be held at the Good Shepherd Memorial Gardens Chapel in Ocala, Florida on Tuesday, May 16. Visitation will begin at 2pm with the service immediately following. A celebration of life service will be held at 4:00 pm, Tuesday, May 23rd at the Fort King Presbyterian Church, 13 NE 36th Avenue, Ocala, Florida 34470. Reverend Ray Ruark will be officiating.

Memorials may be made to the Hospice of Marion County.
