Marshall Lloyd Roberts lived 81 full, wonderful years and went to his heavenly home on Wednesday, May 10, 2017. Marshall was born on November 24, 1935, to Marshall Lee and Verna Louise (Jones) Roberts.

He was a member of Fern Creek United Methodist Church for over 66 years, a 1956 graduate of Fern Creek High School, and retired from AT&T in 1985 with 25 years of service.

He was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Mary Alice Markwell (Bill); brothers, Joseph Barney (J.B.) and Freddie Lee Roberts; brother-in-law, William Markwell; and granddaughter, Jessalyn Diane Tabor.

He is survived by his wife of 58 years, the former Lenora Jones; daughters, Kim Roberts, Melissa Tabor (Scott), and Birte Westius (Dirk); son, Bryan Howay (Sharon); grandchildren, Judson Marshall Tabor, Travis and Ethan Howay, Clara Westius, and embraced as grandchildren, Ashley Lee (Jeff) and Leah Turner (Keith); sister-in-law, Patricia Roberts; brothers-in-law, Paul Jones, Jr. (Vicki) and Larry Jones (Janice); a multitude of beloved nephews, nieces, and friends; and his 'babies,' Baby and Hailey.

While at Fern Creek High School Marshall played baseball; he was a pitcher and started varsity as an eighth grader and held a strike-out record while there. He also played football where he was the Junior Varsity starting quarterback. He was honored by FCHS in October, 2001, by having the expanded football complex wing dedicated as the Marshall Roberts Wing of Champions, "in appreciation of his dedication, enthusiasm, hard work, and lifelong support of the football and athletic programs and the entire Fern Creek community."

Through the years, Marshall coached both little league baseball and his daughters in softball. He helped start the Fern Creek Junior Baseball League, which played their games on the high school baseball field located behind the school, in part of the area where today the girls' softball field is located. During his tenure as president of Fern Creek Junior Baseball (1967-May, 1971) the League outgrew the high school facility and with the hard work of coaches and parents, and in cooperation with the Metropolitan Parks Department, the League was moved to Fern Creek Park where it has continued to grow and become the Fern Creek Babe Ruth League. Field No. 5 has been named the Marshall Roberts field in his honor.

Marshall was a member of the Fern Creek Lions Club as long as his health allowed participation, and was active in the Senior Citizens group which met at the high school. He was the first Chairman of the Fern Creek High School Alumni Association, where in February, 1998, he was named to the first FCTHS Alumni Hall of Fame. In July, 1997, he was recognized by the Fern Creek Heritage Festival committee with a Leader Award for his "unique dedication, sacrifice and commitment to his community and its people." Marshall was one of "The People" folks of Fern Creek featured in the Fern Creek Lore & Legacy, Volume II, published by the Fern Creek Women's Club.

Besides his wife and daughters, the joys of his life included cheering on the athletes of his beloved Fern Creek Tigers and the U of L Cardinals. He followed the Fern Creek State Softball champs to the Softball World Series in New Hampshire and the Fern Creek basketball team to the 2017 State Sweet Sixteen in Rupp Arena.

Probably his most fitting tribute came from a graduating senior. As the 2003 Heisman scholar-athlete for FCTHS, he had to write an essay describing his idea of a "hero" in the community—and he picked Marshall. He fittingly described Marshall as having "...a smile on his face and a Fern Creek baseball hat fitted nicely around his snowy white hair." Marshall had quite a collection of FCHS and U of L caps. That's how you knew him when you saw him.

His funeral is 11am Tuesday at Fern Creek United Methodist Church, 6727 Bardstown Road with entombment in Resthaven Mausoleum. Visitation is 2-8pm Monday after 9:30am Tuesday until the time of the service at the church.
