A foot stone grave marker at Magnolia Cemetery, Apalachicola Fla., memorializes Col James W. Conine's service as a ranking officer in the Union Army 5th Colored Troop. He was wounded and discharged after service in Virginia and North Carolina in the fall of 1864. A note is appended to his Army records stating that he was diagnosed with mouth cancer and died in Elizabeth, N.J. A daughter of James and Fanny Conine - Carrie Shaw -- is buried nearby at Magnolia Cemetery. Fanny and two more daughters are buried in CA
