OBITUARY

Michael A. Basile, 90, a retired CIA technical illustrator who worked part time at Children's National Medical Center as a graphic artist, died Feb. 1 at the Stella Maris hospice in Towson, MD, of complications from pneumonia. He was a Silver Spring resident.

Mr. Basile joined the CIA in the late 1940s, initially as a clerk and stenographer. He began working in technical illustration in the 1960s and retired in 1986. He worked with Children's Hospital from 1971 to 1986.

Michael Anthony Basile was born in Vandergrift, PA, and raised in Washington, where he graduated in 1938 from Eastern High School. He served in the Army Air Forces in the Pacific during World War II.

His memberships included the American Legion and the Moose Lodge. He played baseball until his 70s.

His first wife, Pauline Herbert Basile, died in 1982 after 38 years of marriage. His second wife, Jeanne Barton Basile, died in 2006 after 23 years of marriage.

Survivors include four children from his first marriage, Nancy Kelbaugh of Baltimore, Stephen Basile of Gaithersburg, Brett Basile of Mount Airy and Jennifer Bailey of West Palm Beach, Fla.; two brothers, Alfred Basile of Chesapeake, Va., and Alfonse Basile of Great Falls; a sister, Ellen Oneto of Ocean Pines, Md.; 10 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.

Surviving children include Nancy Kelbaugh, Stephen Basile, Brett Basile and Jennifer Bailey. Also survived by 10 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.

Memorial Service to be held on March 25, 2011, Stella Maris Chapel, Towson, MD, 10:30 a.m. Donations appreciated to Stella Maris Hospice Care.

I started my federal service career under Mr. Basile's supervision and guidance and will always remember him as an early role model that helped me tremendously throughout my working life. He is a permanent fixture in all the fond memories I reserve for that part of my life. I will always remember him as such.
