A graveside funeral service to celebrate the life of Carrie Alma Newton, 101, of Marshall will be at Algoma North Cemetery. She was five days shy of celebrating her 102nd birthday.

She was born to James and Carrie Elia in New Orleans, La.
She was a graduate of Marshall High School and of the Oscar B. Jones Nursing School's first graduating class.

On December 24, 1935, Carrie Elia and Howard Preston "Pokey" Newton united in marriage. Carrie worked many years at the Longhorn Army Ammunition Plant and Marshall Memorial Hospital. She was a member of Second Baptist Church and in her free time she enjoyed cooking, sewing and quilting.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Howard Newton; two children, Dennis Michael Newton and Barbara Newton Phillips; brother, John "Buddy" Elia; sisters, Lottie Elia Moore and Helen Elia Ayers.

Survivors included her sons, Charles "Buddy" Newton and wife Alice, and David "Scooter" Newton and wife Linda; daughter Dr. Angela Taylor; daughter-in-law, Dorothy Newton; brother, (Retired) Brigadier General Charles V.L. Elia (Barbara); grandchildren, Debbie Newton Tankersly (Eric), Todd Newton (Tansy), Scott Newton (Allison), Brian Newton (Danielle), Dawn Phillips Oros (Lance), Carrie Phillips Palumbo (Darrin), Toni Newton Jones (Brad), Preston Newton (Leslie), Elizabeth Newton and Jennifer Newton Myers (David). She is also survived by numerous great and great-great-grandchildren, and a loving extended family and friends.
