Served in the 3rd Maryland Infantry from 26 July 1864 until discharged with company on 31 July 1865. Listed as: John Meyer

Enlisted on 3 September 1873 into the 7th U. S. Cavalry. He was a private in Company M, under Thomas French at the time of the Battle of the Little Big Horn. Company M was one of the companies under Reno that went across the river and attacked the indian village, only to be driven back across and up onto what is now known as Reno Hill. There they held off the indians. He was wounded, probably after they reached the hilltop.
