Sara Elise Garau was the daughter of Raymond Dewey and Anna Andreth (Rosencranz) Garau. Her marriage was to James Byron Oliver, and they were the parents of at least one son, James Raymond Oliver. She had been a school teacher and counselor.

Sara Elisa Garau Oliver, 53, of West Lafayette, died at 2:23 AM Tuesday, June 2, 1992, in St. Elizabeth Hospital Medical Center, following 20 months of ill-health. Born Sept, 28, 1938, at Rushville, IN, she was a 1956 graduate of Rushville High School. She completed her bachelor of science degree in elementary education in 1959, her master of arts degree in counseling in 1961, both at Ball State University. She moved to West Lafayette from Indianapolis 23 years ago.

Mrs. Oliver completed basic tax courses 1977-1984 at H&R Block, studied accounting at Ivy Tech, and completed classes in continuing education from 1984-1988. From September 1988 to December 1991, she was an academic counselor at Purdue University, first with the School of Humanities, Social Sciences and Education. When those schools split, she was academic counselor with the School of Education. She was an account clerk in the Child Development and Family Studies Department at Purdue from August 1984 to May 1988, and had been a temporary account clerk for the Consumer Science and Retailing Department in 1983.

A tax preparer for H&R Block from 1978-1984, she taught Block's basic tax course, and was office manager. She also was a real estate seminar lead from from 1970-1980.

Mrs. Oliver taught school from 1959-1966 for the Indianapolis Public School Corp., the Department of Defense in Molesworth, England, and Fairford, England, the Antioch School Corp., and the Union City School Corp. She had served as team mother for junior varsity softball, as vice president of a youth softball league, was co-chairperson for the West Lafayette Junior High School Parent Council and a member of Cumberland School. She had been a den mother for Cub Scouts, assistant leader for Brownies and Girl Scouts, and a room mother for eight years.

She was a member of St. Andrew's United Methodist Church in West Lafayette and chairperson of the nursery school board. She was a member and recording secretary of West Lafayette Citizens Safety Committee and a member of Purdue Academic Counselors and Advisors, having served as treasurer.

She married James B. Oliver on Dec. 19, 1964, at Whitney, Oxfordshire, England; he survives. Also surviving are a son, James Raymond Oliver of West Lafayette; a daughter, Susan Elizabeth Oliver, at home; two brothers, John E. Garau of Martinsville and David R. Garau of Rushville; and a sister, Ardith Parmer of Big Pine Key, FL.
