Leslie Richard Firl, 88, of Red Wing, died Tuesday, May 9, 2017 at the Villa at Hi-Park. He was born January 11, 1929 in Hay Creek, to Max and Henrietta (Diercks) Firl and attended rural schools in Hay Creek. He served in the US Army from 1951-1952 during the Korean War and received the Purple Heart Award. On December 26, 1953, he was united in marriage to Lois Richter. He worked at LaGrange Shoe and Red Wing Shoe Company, retiring after 40 years. Lois died Sept. 8, 2009. Les was an active member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church and had served as an usher for many years. He also belonged to the local snowmobile club and enjoyed camping, fishing, traveling, working in his yard and gardening and going to his morning coffee club.

He is survived by 2 sons, Jerry (Linda) Firl of Hager City and Craig (Lynn) Firl of Red Wing; 2 grandchildren, Devin and Megan Firl; 6 brothers, Kenneth (Marcy) Firl of Onalaska, Wis., Alvin Firl of Red Wing, Dale Firl of Eagan, Rodney (Caroline) Firl of Washington, John Firl of Stewartville and Dean Firl of Andover; 3 sisters, Marlene Moosmann and Mary Louise (Ron) Olson both of Stewartville and Marlys (Dave) Kahl of New York Mills and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Lois; an infant sister; one grandson, Michael Firl and 2 brothers, Duane and Donald Firl.

Funeral service will be 11 a.m. Friday, May 12, 2017 at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church with Rev. Kristen Schlauderaff officiating. Burial will be at Oakwood Cemetery. Visitation will be 5-7 p.m. Thursday, May 11, at the Mahn Family Funeral Home, Bodelson-Mahn Chapel and for one hour prior to the service. Memorials are preferred to St. Paul’s Lutheran Church.
