Settling in the Santa Cruz, California area, Almus married his second wife, Elizabeth Ellen Hildreth-Rubottom on February 6, 1857. Together they had the following children: Mary Elizabeth "Agnes" Rountree, John Almus Rountree, Susan Jane Rountree, Thomas Hildreth Rountree, Joseph Jay Rountree Sr., Richard Harrison Rountree, Daisy Seabright Rountree, Myrtle Elise Rountree, and Levitha "Vicey" Rountree.
Almus served as the Santa Cruz County Sheriff from Oct 4 1869 - Oct 2 1871, the first of several generations of lawmen in California. He later went to Davenport Landing to run a hotel. Then he returned to Santa Cruz to serve as a justice of the peace. Almus passed away on January 25, 1891.
