Of "Buckingham" & "Laneville". He was a Burgess in 1700, 1702, 1718, and probably in 1736; also a member of the Council. His will dated 1 Nov 1739 and probated 12 Feb 1744. (VA Will Records, pp. 649-650).
Edmund Jennings Lee, _Lee of Virginia 1642-1892_ (Baltimore: Genealogical Publishing Co., 1974), pp. 85-86: "From Henry Corbin's youngest son, Gawin (possibly youngest child), are descended the Virginia family. He was a prominent man in the Colony; was Burgess in 1700, 1702, 1718, and probably in 1736; also a member of the Council. Richard of Laneville in a letter (preserved in his letter book) states that his 'father Gawin Corbin died in the 1st of January, 1745.' It is said that he was married several times; he was certainly married twice, and probably three times. His first wife was Catharine, daughter of Ralph Wormeley (probably by his first wife, Catharine Lunsford), no issue; he married, secondly, Jane, daughter and co-heir of John Lane, of York River, and widow of Willis Wilson--she was living as late as 1715; by this wife he had issue; possibly she was the mother of all his children. Bishop Meade has stated that 'Gawin Corbin, the other son of Henry Corbin, and once President of the Council, married a daughter of William Bassett, and left seven children,' etc. [note: Old Churches, Families, etc., II, 146]. The Va Gazette gives notice of the death on the 12th of June, 1738, of Martha, wife of Col. Gawin Corbin of King and Queen county. William Bassett, second of the name in Virginia, had a daughter, Martha, born the 28th of December, 1694 (Keith). This Gawin certainly left three sons, Richard, John, and Gawin; as to the number of his daughters there is some uncertainty. Bishop Meade has stated that he had four, and that they married: Jenny, Col. John Bushrod, Burgess, Westmoreland, 1748-55, and had, among others, Hannah, who married John Augustine Washington; Joanna, Major Robert Tucker; Alice, Benjamin Needles; and Anne, Willoughby Allerton."
Bishop William Meade, _Old Churches, Ministers, and Families of Virginia_ (Philadelphia: J.B. Lippincott, 1891), vol. II, p. 146: "Gawin Corbin, the other son of Henry Corbin, and once President of the Council, married a daughter of William Bassett, and left seven children--three sons and four daughters. Jenny, one of his daughters, married a Mr. Bushrod; Joanna married Major Robert Tucker; Alice married Benjamin Needler, and the other a Mr. Allerton. His sons were--1st, Richard Corbin of Laneville, who married Miss Betty Tayloe, daughter of Colonel John Tayloe (Carter Braxton married their oldest daughter); 2d, John Corbin, of whose history I am ignorant (the lands devised to him were chiefly in Maryland); 3d, Gawin Corbin, once a member of the Council, and who married Hannah Lee, sister of Richard Henry Lee."
Spouse Notes: Edmund Jennings Lee, _Lee of Virginia 1642-1892_ (Baltimore: Genealogical Publishing Co., 1974), p. 85: "Bishop Meade has stated that 'Gawin Corbin, the other son of Henry Corbin, and once President of the Council, married a daughter of William Bassett, and left seven children,' etc. [note: Old Churches, Families, etc., II, 146]. Gawin Corbin's son Gawin named his only daughter Martha; as there were no Marthas in the family of his wife, Hannah Lee, it seems likely that Martha was named for his mother.
