Obituary ~ Henry A. Secor

Lifelong Rockland Resident, Henry A. Secor of New City passed away peacefully at Nyack Hospital on Friday, October 20, 2006 at the age of 79 with his loving family at his side. Born in New City on March 23, 1927 to Russell B. Secor and Allenphean (nee Stein).

Henry attended Congers High School. On May 22, 1945 he went into the US Army training as a Surgical Technician and following the end of WW II became a Mess Sergeant and received an honorable discharge in May 1947.

For many years Henry worked for Gessel's Pig Farm in New City which later became Gessel's Service Station where he worked as an Auto Mechanic until 1984 when he went to work for the Town of Clarkstown Highway Department as a mechanic, a position he held until his retirement in 1998.

For 58 years Henry was a dedicated and active member of the New City Fire Engine Company No. 1, joining the company on February 2, 1948. As a young member Henry was expected to work on the Bingo and Carnival Committees which raised the funds needed for the building of the Company's firehouse. With the support of the Company Henry rose through the Officer Ranks which culminated with him serving as Chief of the Company from January, 1968 through December 1969. Following the completion of his term as Chief, Henry went on to serve as Training Officer, which allowed him to work with and train the 16 and 17 year olds in the Company's Jr. firefighter program, a program which was begun during his tenure as Chief. From 1973 to 1985 Henry served in the appointed position of Deputy Chief. From 1973 to 1980, along with three brother firefighters, much of Henry's spare time was spent restoring the 1936 Chevrolet Fire truck which had originally been purchased by the Company. For more than 20 years Henry would be seen driving 9-250 as the truck is known in the various firemen's parades throughout the county. Henry served on numerous committees, including the committees which oversaw the purchase and/or restoration of the Company's trucks as well as on the committees which organized and oversaw the various firemen's parades in town. From 1992 through 2003 Henry would often be seen at the firehouse "supervising" the construction of the company's current firehouse. Until the time of his death Henry thought nothing of working on the Company's Fire Prevention committee since he knew that the community needed to be educated on this matter. Because of his devotion in 986 Henry was selected "Fireman of the Year" by his Company. Henry was a life member, Past President and the 1st Director Emeritus of the Rockland Volunteer Fire Chief's Association where he served on the Award's, Nominating and Auditing Committees to name but a few. For many years he also chose to serve as Historian of the Association. Henry was also a life member of the Rockland County Volunteer Fireman's Association and a Charter Member of the Wm E. De Bevoice American Legion Post 1682 in New City.

Henry was a dedicated and affectionate husband to his loving wife of 49 years, Katherine (Kay) whom he married on March 16, 1957, a caring and devoted father to daughters Pam Secor of New City and Kim (and husband David) Farkas of Nanuet, and adoring grandfather to the prides of his life, grandson Shawn Farkas and granddaughter Katrina Farkas both of Nanuet, a wonderful "little brother" to sister, Charlotte Heaney of Oneonta, NY and "big brother" to brother Dewain Secor of Montgomery, NY, all of whom survive him. He was predeceased by this parents, sister Julia Fenical and brother Russell A. Secor. The family will be present to receive friends and relatives at the Michael J. Higgins Funeral Home, 321 South Main Street, New City on Monday, October 23, between 2 and 4 PM and 7 and 9 PM, with Firematic Services at 7:30. Funeral will be at the Funeral Home on Tuesday, October 24, 2006 at 10:00 AM, with The Rev. Frances Twiggs, Rector of St. John's Episcopal Church officiating.
