Leonard is the third son of Robert Wilson Merrill and Aurilla Losee. He was born while the family was living at Fort Apache, Arizona. His mother noted in her history: "The doctor was out of town on a call and the nurse was sick in bed. Therefore, Robert went a mile the other side of the fort in a buggy to get another nurse. . . I got the hired girl to put quilts and pillows around me so I wouldn't fall over. I sat up that way and tied and cut the cord before the doctor or nurse got back. I was thankful to my Heavenly Father that I knew what to do."

The family moved to Idaho and back to Utah as extended family needed them during Leonard's childhood finally settling on a farm in Wellington, Utah. When Leonard was high school age the family moved to Price.

Leonard married Ruby Darlene Davis on May 29, 1933 in Payson, Utah. They became parents to two daughters, Darlene and Glennys. Ruby preceded him in death in 1974.
