Author. Born in Vienna, Austria, he worked as a journalist and began his literary career at the age of 45. At the start of the World War II he was arrested by the Nazis, but with the help of James Joyce and other writers, he was released and eventually settled in the United States. Widely recognized as one of the best modernist authors, Broch is remembered for works such as "The Death of Virgil", "The Sleepwalkers", and "The Guiltless". He died in New Haven, Connecticut.
