Mrs. Ellen Dicus was born a slave in Tennessee. She was at times "owned" by two different slavers - one named Hobby and one named Sloan, so at different times before emancipation she used either of those names. At different times on formal records of her children's, either of those names were used as "mother's maiden name", so they both have been retained for historical clarity. But the surname she chose was the one used by her husband Emanuel "Manuel E." Dicus when they were married, and that was Mrs. Ellen Dicus.
