Gary “Bubba” Schaefer, lost his long, well fought battle with cancer on May 2, 2017. ‘With great appreciation from Gary and his family: love for his “Angels” at dialysis, with Drs. Thangaraj and Prabahakaran, Dr. Ferrari and Leah Boehmer at the Cancer Center, for their time and patience with Gary and his family, along with Mercy and Iowa City Hospitals are the ones who let us have him for as long as God let him stay, before his wings were ready.
A Celebration of Life for Gary will be held 2pm, Saturday (May 6, 2017) at Hogan-Bremer-Moore Colonial Chapel, 126 3rd NE, Mason City with Chaplain Dean Baumann officiating.
Visitation will be held from 5pm until 7pm, Friday (May 5, 2017) at the funeral chapel.
Gary was born on August 21, 1955, to John and Ruth Schaefer, he was raised in New Ulm, MN, and graduated from New Ulm High School in 1974.
He drove long haul for J.R. Schugel Trucking for several years. Gary married Sue Renton, and to this marriage came Christine and Jason.
Gary later married Diane Peterson, to whom he is still and will always be very much in love with, his soul mate.
After this, he moved to Florida to work for U-Haul, while attending classes for Ford Motor Co., to certify as a Parts Manager. After completing this (with flying colors), he worked for several Ford Dealers.
He then moved back to Mason City to be closer to his children and family.
Gary also drove for Five Star Co-Op and Larry’s towing. He loved driving and meeting new people in different types of situations.
He joined the Marine Corps League about 10 years ago, and enjoyed working on the parade float. He always had new ideas for how to make the float better and more noticeable. He had several of the first MCL garage sales at his own home, and organized them along with several other events. Toys for Tots is his passion, always working throughout the year to find new volunteers, places to donate, support and to get others involved in an awesome program. “Every kid deserves Christmas”, to him this will be carried on as a legacy.
Gary joined the VFW as an Honor Guard member. He served proudly at many veteran’s services with great RESPECT and HONOR. Thanks to Chuck “Chubba” Harris, Dean Baumann, Ernie Hudson and Al Pierce for their respect and faith in all of Gary’s life adventures.
He is survived by his wife, Diane; children, Christine (Ed), Jason (Caitlin); grandchildren, Dylan, Kylie and Zuri; in-laws, Vernon and Bonnie Peterson; brothers-in-law, Steve (Cindy), and Dan (Kelly); cousin, Teresa Jones; sister, Sandy ‘Sissy’ Schaefer; and many nieces, nephews, friends, and acquaintances are uncountable as he had so many from different walks in life.
Gary was preceded in death by his parents, John and Ruth, grandparents, Aunt Peggy Jones-Rumbough and a special niece, Adrienne Lee, who met him at the gate.
