Enlisted, December 2, 1889 ( founding year ), in Troop A, NYNY, at the Dickel's Riding Academy, 130 West 56th Street, NY, NY. Serving in the ranks, as a corporal, he saw field service with Troop A, during the Buffalo Switchmen's Strike, February 1892. Additionally he saw field service, as a sergeant, with Troop A during the Brooklyn Motormen's Strike, November 1894.

On March 9, 1896 Troop A became Squadron A, NYNG, made up of Troops 1 & 2. He was commissioned shortly there after, 2nd lieutenant, Cavalry, and assigned to Troop 2. In December of 1896 he was promoted to 1st Lieutenant.

When the Spanish American War began, he was selected to serve in Troop A, NY Volunteer Cavalry. The Troop mustered in, for war service, at Camp Black, Hempstead, NY, May 20, 1898. After muster the NY Squadron ( Troops A & C ) were assigned to Camp Alger, VA, for training.

At Camp Alger he served as the Adjutant till Captain Badgley, his troop commander, became ill with typhoid. He assumed command, June 10, 1898 ,of Troop A and remained in command till Captain Badgley rejoin the Troop in New York Harbor, on their return, September 10, 1898.

After training at Camp Alger, the NY Squadron sailed for Puerto Rico, aboard the transport Massachusetts, July 28, 1898. The Squadron came ashore, August 4, 1898, at Playa, port of Ponce, PR. Troop A participated in the Puerto Rico campaign, assigned to General Miles Headquarters and preformed detached service.

Troop A returned the State, September 10, 1898, aboard the transport Mississippi, docking at Jersey City, NJ.

He came down with typhoid on board the transport Mississippi and was not able to return to duty till November 1, 1898.

He mustered out of war service, November 25, 1898, and discharged from Squadron A, March 1, 1899.

Three of his nephews were members of Squadron A, Edmund B Belliner, Rene Duchamp Bellinger and Frederick Coudert Belliger.
