Patrick C. Gates, of Sanborn, NY, passed away on Wednesday, May 27, 2015, at home under the care of Niagara Hospice after a long hard battle with cancer with his family at his side. He was born in Buffalo, NY, on September 21, 1949, the son of the late John and Marie (Getman) Gates.

Pat was raised in the Sanborn area and attended Starpoint School District. As a youth he enjoyed wood working and belonged to the 4-H, competing in the Niagara County Fair where he won several awards. He worked at Durfey's General Store on Shawnee and Lockport Roads, while attending college. Pat graduated from E.C.C.C. in Police Science. He wanted to join the law enforcement, but after not making the height requirement for the Niagara County Sheriff or the State Police, he went to work for the Carborundum Co. on Corey Dr. in Sanborn. Later he transferred to their Hyde Park location and worked throughout their changes to Kanthal Globar, working his way from laborer to retiring after 45 years as Manufacturing Foreman. He was not afraid to get his hands dirty and worked along side his team when needed. Many times during the Strikes he was locked in.

He was divorced with a son when he met the true love of his life, who was also divorced, Dawn "Sue" Noel (Walker) in the Blizzard of 77'. They knew they were perfect soul mates and married in March of 1977. Together they have celebrated 38 years together and the birth of their 3 children. Pat was an avid hunter and fisherman, and proud family man. He loved camping with his family and spent summers camping in the Seneca Falls area when they were younger as well as the 1,000 Islands in his retirement. He continued to travel to 1,000 Islands and Florida with his wife to visit their daughter Patricia. He was looking forward to his daughter Laura's wedding this August.

Pat was known for his love and devotion to his family, his family was the most important thing to him. From the time his children were born he was a "hands on Dad." He was active in all they did from scouting to chaperoning school field trips. To his children he was a source of wisdom and strength and taught them strong work ethics. He had a special bond with his 3 grandchildren who are special needs and cherished them. His home was a safe haven for his children's friends, he opened his home to all of them and tried to teach them the golden rules. Some of them even called him dad. He called his home and that of his neighbors "SLEEPY HOLLOW" because of its peacefulness and camaraderie of everyone. He was known for his quick wit and generosity. His kindness touched many lives, he would do anything for anyone if he could.

He is survived by his wife Dawn "Sue" Gates; two daughters, Laura (fiance' Peter Bloomingdale) Gates of Ransomville, NY, and Patricia (Jason) Maier of Orlando, FL; one son Shawn (fiance Debbie McMicking) Gates of Lewiston, NY; three grandchildren, Dawn, Brandon and Alyssa Dolan; two brothers, Joseph (Nila) Gates and Peter Gates; one sister, Judy (Paul) Wendler, also many nieces and nephews. Pat was the father of the late S. Sgt Scott A. Coe and brother of the late John Gates.
