VERNON James S. Babcock, 80, of Seneca Turnpike, died late Monday evening, April 10, 2017, in St. Elizabeth's Hospital, Utica.

Born in Binghamton, on Dec. 17, 1936, he was a son of James W. and Catharine Sterling Babcock. A lifelong resident of the area, James was a graduate of Oneida High School, Class of 1955, and later completed schooling to become a certified draftsman.

Prior to his retirement, Mr. Babcock was employed by Oneida Royal Heater for over 40 years and was later employed by the Oneida City Schools in the custodial department. James was of the Episcopalian faith, an avid Harley rider and a member of the Oneida Rifle Club. In his earlier years, James enjoyed collecting antique toys and clocks.

Surviving are one daughter and son-in-law, Deborah and James Clarey of Oneida; one son and daughter-in-law, Gregory S. and Myong Babcock of Canastota; one brother and sister-in-law, Richard and Melody Babcock of Ballston Spa; four grandchildren and their spouses, Lynne and John Clarey Winters, James and Monique Clarey, Timothy and Brittany Lawler and Josh and Sayaka Babcock; three great-grandchildren, Jaxon, Vivian, and Ethan; several nieces and nephews; and many friends including Joann Vedder; two former spouses, Janet Weaver and Doreen Sutton; his beloved dog Spike and birds Baby and Poco. He was predeceased by a son Keith S. Babcock, Jan. 23, 1991, a brother Gerald W. Babcock, Nov. 8, 2011 and a former wife Pamela Babcock. The family would like to thank the staff, nurses, and doctors at St. Elizabeth's CTICU for the excellent care and treatment, given to James before his passing.

Funeral services will be held privately at a time and date to be determined by the family.
