Son of Walter FitzRagemer de Welle, he married NN de Gant, daughter of Walter de Gant of Folkingham and Maud de Bretagne of Richmond.

After 1197, he became a monk at Bardney Abbey, where he died and was buried. His son, Robert Fitz William de Welle conveyed lands to Bardney Abbey on the day his father was received by the Abbey. His wife died sometime after 1197, and was buried in the monk's chapel at Bardney Abbey.
