Mauritanian Statesman. He served as the 6th Chairman of the Military Council for Justice and Democracy (head of state) of Mauritania from August 3, 2005 to April 19, 2007. He served as the director of the national police force from 1987 to 2005 and was a long-time ally of President Maaouya Ould Taya. On August 3, 2005, President Taya was ousted in a bloodless coup and a group of military officers took over. They installed him as the Chairman of the Military Council for Justice and Democracy. He served in this capacity until new elections were held in 2006 and Sidi Ould Cheikh Abdallahi was sworn in as the new president. After the military ousted President Abdallahi in 2008, he declared his candidacy for the 2009 presidential election as an independent, but lost in the first round of voting. He continued in the opposition to newly elected President Mohamed Ould Abdel Aziz up until his passing of a heart attack.
