Mark J Shea
Mark J. Shea, one of a family of nine children born to Michael and Margaret Dooley Shea, was born July 2, 1893 at Delphos, Kansas. At the age of 82 years, he died at the Mitchell County Hospital, Beloit, Ks. on November 3, 1975.
Mark grew to manhood and received his education in Delphos. In 1915 he was united in marriage to Gertrude Shavey at Concordia, Ks. To this family two children were born, Max and Beverly.
In the late 1920’s they lived in Minneapolis, Ks., where Mark had an electrical shop. In 1929 he came to Beoit and in partnership with Harry Carper, they opened the Shea & Carper Appliance Co., at 108 S. Mill. Mark continued in the business until he retired in 1966.
Mark was manager of the Beloit Ban Johnson Baseball team in 1938; and continued through the years to be a sports enthusiast. He was a member of the St. John’s Catholic church of Beloit and the Knights of Columbus.
His only son, Max was killed during WWII on July 15, 1944. His wife Gertrude died in May of 1952 and on October 23, 1954 he was united in marriage to Irene Pestinger Hake at Salina, Kansas.
Due to his health, Mark and Irene went to live in Tucson, Arizona in 1968. They returned to Beloit in April of 1975.
In addition to his son, Max and his first wife Gertrude, Mark was the last member of his family, having been preceded in death by five brothers, Jim, Bill, Tom, Lewis and Fred; a sister Mrs. Margaret Wallace and an infant brother and sister.
Mark leaves to mourn his passing, his wife, Irene of the home, his daughter, Mrs. Beverly Powers of Houston, Texas; a step-daughter, Mrs. Lois Greim and her husband Rex of Kansas City, Mo.; a step-son Dan Hake and his wife Helen of Chicago; and five grandchildren.
Funeral services were held at 10:00 am. Wednesday, Nov. 5, 1975 at St. John’s catholic Church with Rev. Henry Kieffer officiating.
Casket bearers were Mike and Robert Earle, Richard Fetter, Bill Pestinger, Richard Shea, and Dennis Sullivan. Jim Pestinger served as the Lector Reader. Music was furnished by the choir with Mrs. LeRoy Wiegand organist.
Interment was made in the St. John’s Cemetery with the McDonald funeral home in charge of arrangements.
