After over 71 years of marriage, Wilf Russell, 93, passed away only 4 minutes before his wife Vera, 91.

Wilf was diagnosed with dementia last year and was in Magna Care Home in Wigston when he passed away. Vera was 3 miles away in Leicester Royal Infirmary. Vera died before she was told Wilf had passed away.

The couple met when Vera was 16 and Wilf was 18 years old. Wilf served with the RAF in World War Two and fought in Italy and North Africa. They were engaged before he left and married as soon as he returned.

They lived in West Bromwich in the Midlands after their marriage. Wilf worked as an engineer and Vera worked part-time in a cake shop.

They had three sons, Peter, Colin & Gary. Gary died in his 30's from multiple sclerosis.

According to family members, they were a "very close couple" who "adored" their family: "Vera very much spoke for them as a couple and Wilf went along with whatever she said. Maybe that's why they lasted so long.

The couple made the decision to move to Oadby in Leicestershire 10 years ago to be closer to their son Peter and his family.

Wilf and Vera are survived by two sons, Peter & Colin; five grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.

Their funeral service and cremation will take place on April 12th at Great Glen Crematorium.
