ST. GEORGE, UT--Carol Janet Griffin Underwood, age 64, passed away Sunday, December 20, 1998, at the St. George Care Center in St. George, Utah, after a courageous battle with cancer.
She was born July 31, 1934 in Dickens, Iowa, to John Stanley and Mayme Fredrica Holmberg Griffin. She married Richard E. Underwood, November 2, 1952 in Spencer Iowa. Their marriage was later solemnized in the Salt Lake City Temple. They have two children. Carol was raised in Iowa. After her marriage to Richard, they moved to Utah in 1964 before moving to St. George four years ago. She was employed by the United States Department of Agriculture. She assisted farmers in setting up farm programs and was highly regarded by all who knew her. She was a member of the ASCS. Carol was an active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. She and Richard were the first converts to the Church in their families, pioneering a heritage for their posterity. She held many callings and was active in organizations including the Golden Girls Choir and the Relief Society. She enjoyed sewing, playing the organ, camping, and going on trips. Her greatest love was being with her family. Carol will be missed by all who knew her.She is survived by her husband, Richard; two children: Richard E. (Carla) Underwood, of South Jordan, UT; Paula (Tony) Stott, of Sandy, UT; seven grandchildren: Andrea Terry; Neil Terry; Anthony Stott; Tiffany Stott; Justin Stott; Richard Underwood; and Robert Underwood; mother: Mayme Griffin, of Mesa, AZ; brother: John Edmund (Phyllis) Griffin, of El Cajon, CA; and Karen Kay (Roger) Mortensen, of Mesa, AZ. She was preceded in death by her father, John Stanley Griffin.

Funeral services will be Wednesday, December 23, 1998 at 11 a.m. at the Pine View Stake Center, 575 North 2450 East. Visitations will be Tuesday, December 22, 1998 from 7 to 8 p.m. at Metcalf Mortuary, 300 West St. George Blvd. and Wednesday, 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. at the chapel prior to services. Interment will be in the Washington City Cemetery under the direction of Metcalf Mortuary, 673-4221.
