Gary Leland Sumner, 65, of Lynchburg, was welcomed into the arms of Jesus Christ, his Savior, on Thursday, December 3, 2015. He was the husband of Cheryl Sumner for 33 years. Gary was born in Staunton, Va. on May 23, 1950 to the late James Leeford Sumner, Jr. and the late Mary Clark Sumner. He was an active servant at Heritage Baptist Church, involved in mentoring young couples and young men, marriage counseling, discipleship, and served on a variety of committees.

Gary retired from Verizon after 41 years of service and was employed at Candler Oil for a short time thereafter.

Along with his wife, Gary is survived by five children, Rebecca Sumner and Jason Sumner of Lynchburg, Deborah Irwin (Nathan) of Staunton, Va., Laurie Cook (Gary) and Michael Sumner (Debra) of Churchville, Va.; two brothers, James Sumner of Staunton, Va., and Harold Sumner of Mt. Sydney, Va.; two sisters, Linda Arbogast and Patty Ergenbright of Churchville, Va.; and three grandchildren.

A visitation will be held at Tharp Funeral Home, Lynchburg, on Sunday, December 6, 2015 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. A Celebration of Gary's life will be held at Heritage Baptist Church on Monday, December 7, 2015 at 11 a.m. with Dr. Jeff Scott officiating.
