Deloris Adams Thomas transitioned from rest to reward on Easter Sunday, April 16, 2017 with her family.
Deloris Adams was born July 6, 1936, the only daughter of James Russell Adams and Lillie Bell Ponder Adams in Brooks County, Georgia.
At the age of 12, Deloris joined Monument Missionary Baptist Church. This church had a special place in her heart because her grandparents gave the land for the church.
She also attended primary school at Monument.
She graduated from Brooks High School in 1954 with honors as co-Valedictorian.
After graduation, she attended the famed Tuskegee Institute in Tuskegee, Alabama on the 5-year work-study plan. She graduated from Tuskegee with a Bachelors of Science Degree in English Education in 1959.
In 1959, Deloris was offered a teaching position in the Brooks County School System.
She did further study at Albany State, Atlanta University, Georgia Southern, and Valdosta State College.
Others have described Deloris as a beautiful soul both inside and out. She exhibited those characteristics in every endeavor in which she participated.
Known for her stylish attire, articulate speech and inspiring demeanor, she became a role model upon her return home to teach.
In 1960, she married Frank Thomas, a fellow teacher. To their union were born two daughters, Valerie Michelle Thomas and Tenjurie Valencia Thomas.
Although married, she continued to attend her home church Monument Missionary Baptist Church.
Eventually, she joined her husband’s church, Bethel AME Church where she served in numerous positions, Sunday School Teacher, Christian Education Director, Stewardess, Church Secretary, Quarterly Conference Secretary, Member of Ladies Auxiliary Board, Steward Board, Debutante Master Christian Commissioner, Women’s Missionary Society, Finance Committee Member and 4th Sunday Women’s Church School Leader.
Further, she served as co-director of Bethel Community Development Center.
She had the distinction of serving as the first female Steward Pro-Tem of the Steward Board.
She also served on various committees on the Thomasville-Bainbridge District and the South Georgia Conference of the AME Church.
She was a member of Kappa Eta Omega Chapter Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. She served as Corresponding Secretary, Recording Secretary, and simultaneously served as Graduate Advisor and the 8th President of Kappa Eta Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated.
Her civic and professional contributions include: Georgia Retired Educators Association,
Brooks County Retired Educators Association, Democratic Party of Georgia, Brooks County Democratic Committee and Family Connections.
Deloris held many positions working tirelessly to promote vision and mission of these organizations.
She received numerous awards, honors, recognitions, plaques and trophies for her service from her church, community and sorority.
Deloris received commendations for her work in voter registration from former Secretary of State Max Cleland.
In addition, she received commendations for her service and commitment to adults and children in her community from State Representative, Amy A. Carter, District 175.
Deloris worked 36 years in the Brooks County School System spending most of her career as an English teacher. She initially began her teaching career at the Elementary level, then Brooks County Junior High, thus ending her teaching career at the Brooks County High School in 1996.
Throughout her teaching career, her ultimate goal was to teach the whole child by nurturing the human spirit and developing them academically.
Deloris was preceded in death by her parents, James and Lillie Adams and
infant brother Alonzo Adams.
She leaves to cherish her precious memories:
