May 27, 1924 ~ April 23, 2017

Ethel Lorraine Gardner, 92, of Rockford, Illinois, passed away peacefully at home on April 23, 2017. She was born May 27, 1924, in Potosi, Wisconsin, the daughter of Bert and Edna (Higgins) Brouillard.

Ethel married Marion L. "Mike" Gardner in Dubuque, IA June 20, 1942, before he entered the U.S. Army for World War II; he predeceased her in 1977. She was an Administrative Assistant at Doane Agricultural Services for 10 years in Oregon, Illinois, and worked several years in women's dress shops in Dubuque and locally.

Ethel was a member of the Eastern Star. As a child growing up on a farm near the Mississippi river Ethel dreamed of travel. To her delight, before her husband passed away they traveled throughout Europe and the United States. She was able to travel with friends thereafter.

For many years, Ethel enjoyed the warm and generous greetings and support of the management and staff of her favorite Rockford restaurant, the Stockholm Inn. Ethel was a devoted and loving mother to her two children, often sacrificing personally for their benefit.

She is survived by: her children, Larry Gardner and Connie (David) Sliktas; granddaughter, Kimberly Gardner; and grandson, Andrew (Karen) Gardner.

She was predeceased by: her parents; husband; four brothers, Dale, Burton, Claire and Robert Brouillard; and two sisters, Thelma Granes and Leila Broihahn.

At Ethel's request there will be a private burial in Linwood Cemetery, Dubuque, Iowa.
