He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Frank Howell (infant) and Ralph Howell; sisters, Ruth Howell Glass and Mildred Howell Faber; and great-nephew, Scott Glass.
Jack was born April 23, 1931 in Pickens County, Alabama to the late Garnett Howell and Bertha McAteer Howell. He graduated from Gordo High School in 1949 and attended Auburn University for one year until he returned home to operate the family farm. Because of his love for the land, Jack never retired from farming. He worked as a rural mail carrier for over 25 years and in his spare time he enjoyed watching Auburn football and traveling with the LLL Club of FNB of Central Alabama.Jack was a dedicated member of Gordo First United Methodist Church and a pillar in his community. He was a faithful member of the Brotherhood Sunday School Class and loved singing about his Savior with the Methodist Men's Choir. He volunteered numerous hours to The Bread of Life Food Pantry and his community involvement included: Board of Directors of FNB of Central Alabama, Gordo Rotary Club, Gordo Masonic Lodge, Director of Pickens County Farmers' Federation and Pickens County Soil and Water Conservation Supervisor.Jack was a true servant for Christ and for all those around him. His daily life was an example of God's love and compassion. A genuinely humble man, he always put others before himself. He was a loving and devoted husband to the love of his life for 58 years. He was affectionately called "Pops" by his grandchildren and all those who loved him. We are confident that Christ greeted him with these words: "Well done, good and faithful servant." Matthew 25:23. Pallbearers will be Dallas Howell, Ben Howell, Graydon Hall, David Howell, Matt Farris, Billy Glass, Kevin Brown, Darrel Hughes, Chris Grimes, Robby Butler, Mitch Dyer and Sammy Sanders. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials to Gordo First United Methodist Church Memorial Fund, P. O. Box 343, Gordo, AL 35466 or to Eagles Wings, 12379 Eagles Wings Drive, Coker, AL 35452.Jack Lavender Howell, age 86, of Gordo, Ala., died May 1, 2017, at his home. Services will be 11 a.m. Wednesday, May 3, 2017, at Gordo First United Methodist Church. Burial will follow in Gordo City Cemetery with Skelton Funeral Home of Reform directing.
