Great granddaughter of George Mason, a Virginia planter and politician, and a delegate to the U.S. Constitutional Convention of 1787, one of three delegates who refused to sign the constitution.

Daughter of Thomson Francis Mason and Elizabeth "Betsey" Clapham Price. Thomson Francis Mason (1785 – 21 December 1838) was a prominent jurist, lawyer, councilman, judge, and the mayor of Alexandria, District of Columbia (now Virginia) between 1827 and 1830.

Thomson and Betsey's five daughters and three sons attended various schools in Alexandria, where they learned music, drawing, and French in addition to reading and writing. The couple were friends with members of the Lee family, the Washingtons, the Madisons, and other landed gentry. Thomson and Betsey entertained lavishly at their Colross and Huntley estates.

Thomas Grimke Rhett was born August 2, 1821 in Charleston, S.C., the son of James Smith Rhett (1797-1855) and Charlotte Haskell Rhett (1794-1871). On June 10, 1846 he married Ann Graham Mason, the daughter of Thompson Francis Mason (1785-1838). Rhett graduated from West Point in 1845 and served in the Mexican-American war where he was promoted to first lieutenant in April 1846 and brevet captain in September following the defense of Peubla, Mexico. After the war he was assigned to a succession of posts, including Fort Laramie, Dakota Territory (Wyoming), 1849-1852; Corpus Christi, Texas, 1852-1855; Fort McIntosh, Texas, 1855; Fort Fillmore, New Mexico, 1857; Fort Union, New Mexico, 1858; Fort Bliss, Texas, 1859-1860. He was promoted to Major in 1858 and served as an army paymaster. In 1861 he resigned and joined the Confederate army, was commissioned a major and served in various posts throughout the war. After the war refusing to stay in the U.S., Rhett served as a colonel of ordinance for the Khedive of Egypt. He died in Baltimore, Maryland, on July 28, 1878.
