Dan Mark Nelson, Jr., son of Dan Sr. and Cecilia (Christensen) Nelson, was born June 27, 1934 in Milan, Minnesota. He was raised on a farm near Hendricks and graduated from Hendricks High School in 1952. Following his education, he enlisted in the U.S. Army. Dan was united in marriage to Marlys Joan Peterson on May 8, 1957 at Wood Lake Lutheran Church, rural Astoria. They resided in Louisiana until he was honorably discharged in 1958 when his father passed away and he returned to Pipestone, MN to farm with his mom and brother. In 1963, Dan and Joan moved to farm near Fish Lake and spent many years raising their family and dairy farming until a move to California in 1986 where he was a successful agriculture salesman. Dan had a passion for hard work whether farming or in sales.
Upon moving home to Hendricks for retirement in 2003, Dan enjoyed restoring vintage tractors, fishing, daily walks around town and visiting with family and friends. He was a member of Christ Lutheran Church.
Dan is lovingly remembered by his wife of sixty years, Joan Nelson of Hendricks; five children: Jody (Dan) Hakes of Woodbury, Minnesota, David (Kim) Nelson of Belle Fourche, South Dakota, Julie Nelson of Woodbury, Minnesota, Duane (Sheila) Nelson of Astoria, South Dakota, and Jennifer (David) Mitchell of Gilbert, Arizona; ten grandchildren: Ben, Kalley, Rachel, Andrew, Ryan, Joanna (Brandon), Michael (Melissa), April (Terry), Colin and Courtney and several great-grandchildren;
one sister-in-law, Sharon Nelson and niece and nephews.
Dan was preceded in death by his parents, niece Barb, brothers Don and Paul.
