In memory of Bridget, 18, who died in a car accident on 8/3/05. From her friend's memorial tribute:

"Bridget was a unique individual. She started out life wanting to be a veterinarian and later on decided that she'd like to be a nurse. Whatever the career idea, there was always an emphasis on helping others. This sense of altruism probably explains why she could so easily befriend new people. As her family here on the Island put it, "Bridget loved the Island and the fact that she was so close to her friends here. She had a wonderful sense of humor and was able to find laughter in everything; there were countless inside jokes that she shared with her friends. No matter where she was, she was liked by the people that met her. She had a great soul."

Her mother, who lives in Colorado and with whom Bridget spent a lot of time in the past year, said that Bridget always seemed to be able to sense the inner essence of people and was drawn to the kindness she felt in others. "She connected to people based on what she saw on the inside."

Bridget always had a fondness for art of all kinds. She loved movies and music, and attended as many concerts as she could. She also had great talent for both drawing and painting. Not long ago she told me that she'd like to become involved in art therapy. She was always creative with the clothes that she wore, too, ripping them and then sewing them back together with patches and such. Maybe it was this creative streak that caused her to be as outspoken as she was at times, always honest about her feelings, a rare and endearing quality." - Thomas Aposporos

Manatee Herald-Tribune article about Bridget's death:

ANNA MARIA -- They were best friends who drew attention with their mohawks, dyed hair, spiked collars and a general love for anything punk rock.

Bridget Laurie Miller met Lillie Marnie at Manatee High School several years ago. Both were new to the area. The teens bonded.

When Bridget moved to Colorado last year to be closer to her mom, the two kept in touch by phone and e-mail.

Bridget flew back here this week and Lillie was at the airport to pick her up. As the two drove back to their parents' homes on the same block on Anna Maria, their car was hit by a semi-truck.

Bridget, 18, was killed in the crash early Tuesday on U.S. 301 near the Interstate 75 north ramp, in Ellenton. Lillie, who was driving, had run a red light at about 3:30 a.m., the Florida Highway Patrol reported.

The 17-year-old was not injured.

The truck driver, Hialeah resident Osvaldo G. Alonso, 43, suffered serious injuries and was taken to Manatee Memorial Hospital.

The death shattered the lives of two families that have grown close over the years.

Bridget and Lillie were inseparable, family members said.

"They had some big dreams together," said Bridget's stepmother, Diana Miller, 39.

The girls shopped together and talked on the phone all the time. They'd planned to find an apartment together, soon, but nothing was set in stone yet.

"She really loved her friends," said a stepsister, Karissa Miller, 16.

At the Goodwill, teenage friends bought shirts and pants they would later rip apart and sew together to make new outfits.

Lillie could not be reached for comment Tuesday, and her parents declined an interview.

Bridget, an artist who drew and painted dark scenes, wore plaid skirts and loved her Converse shoes -- black ones, red or pink, depending on her mood.

She once wrote a piece for school in which she expressed her desire to travel with a rock band.

She once dated a musician, her first serious romance.

"That really appealed to her, that band lifestyle," her stepmother said.

Despite the passion for all that's punk, Bridget wanted to be a nurse like her mom.

Bridget's parents were still making funeral arrangements late Tuesday.
