Son of Rev. Spence Grayson and Mary Elizabeth Wagener.

Peter Grayson was born at the Belle Air Plantation, Prince William Co., VA.

He entered the army at the age of 19. During the Indian Wars, he was present at the Battle of the Wabash, and rescued a friend, Captain Edward Butler, after whom he would later name a son. He was also in the relieving campaign of General Wayne.

Married Katherine "Kitty" Calloway Thorpe (1781, Bedford Co., VA - aft. 1830/bef.1840, Franklin Co., AL) in 1801, Prince Wm. Co., VA. 1830 Census (Franklin Co. AL) Katherine Grayson 40-50 yrs old.

Following his marriage to Katherine, Captain Grayson, in command of the U.S. Post at Knoxville, Tennessee resigned from the army in 1801.

He rejoined to fight in the War of 1812. He was Adjutant General, a Colonel, in Major General Carroll's division of Tennessee Troops, and so saw service in Andrew Jackson's army in New Orleans.

General Jackson reported that he did gallant service and had a rare skill and attention in disciplining the men under him.

Cause of death: Following the end of the Battle of New Orleans, disease had taken him soon after his return home in Tuscumbia, Alabama (age 46).
