Terry Clyde Maxwell
SAN ANGELO
Dr. Terry C. Maxwell, 71 of San Angelo, Texas passed away on Tuesday, April 25, 2017.
He was born in San Angelo, Texas on Sept. 27, 1945. Terry graduated from Lakeview High School and received his B.S. (1968) in Wildlife Management, Texas A& M University. He served in the U.S. Air Force from 1968 to 1972 before heading back to school for the M.S. (1974) in Biology at Angelo State University, followed by the Ph.D. (1979) in Wildlife and Fisheries Science at Texas A& M University.
He was married to and is survived by his loving wife Ann Boyd Maxwell, whom he married on Sept. 4, 1998. Terry was preceded in death by his father George Maxwell, mother ECHO BOX-MAXWELL ROEDER and Step-Father FRED LAWRENCE ROEDER.
He joined the ASU faculty in 1976 in the Department of Biology and after 38 years retired at ASU in 2014. Terry was a very popular professor at ASU receiving several awards for teaching, including the State of Texas 2007 Piper Professor Award. Many of his students may remember him for is colorful chalk drawings. He mentored many students for the Master of Science degree in Biology over his career. He continued to work at the university as Professor of Biology Emeritus, writing, doing artwork, and occasionally teaching class. Terry was a regular contributor to the San Angelo Standard-Times and wrote a weekly nature column, Naturally Texas, illustrated with his own drawings.
Terry also wrote books about the natural history of the Concho Valley and his adventures as a naturalist (Tales of a Journeyman Naturalist) and had many stories to share with family, friends, students and colleagues. Terry often spoke about his interesting adventures that began at the age of 12. He learned to draw birds and other animals from a young age. He often drew magnificent pictures of birds and donated them to local charities to raise funds for the organization.
He delighted in telling stories from his explorations as a naturalist and sharing his knowledge and wonder about plants and animals through his columns, classes and lectures. Terry shared many of his adventures with his loving wife Ann and his friend and colleague Bob Dowler and wife Paula. Together they planned exciting study abroad courses for ASU students.
He is survived by Step-son Steven and wife Lynette Jasper, Step-daughter Amy Jasper and wife Gina Lombrana, Step-Grandson Blake Jasper and Step-Granddaughter Shirin Jasper. Sister Carol Lynn and husband Larry Scoggins and Brother David Roeder.
The first celebration of Terry’s life will be held at Zero One on Saturday April 29, 2017 from 3:30pm - 6pm. A second celebration honoring the life of Terry Maxwell will be announced in the near future.
