Born February 15, 1934, in Burlington, IA he was the son of Fred William and Sophia Elizabeth Stoller Mellinger. On February 21, 1953 Bill married Mary Elizabeth Canfield;
she preceded him in death six years ago.
Bill entered the USAF in April 1953 at the age of 19 and worked on B-47 bomber aircraft in Wichita, Kansas. Four years later in July 1957 with their 4 th child on the way Bill left the Air Force and returned to Burlington. Bill’s career thereafter was driving buses for the Burlington City Transit from 1957 to 1965. Bill then became the Driver for the Burlington Bees baseball team, driving the bus and players to away games as well as to each year’s spring training in Mesa, Arizona. After the season ended in 1972 Bill then began driving for Continental Trailways which he did for some 35 years and retired 8 years ago with an impressive record of completing over 2 million accident-free driving miles for the company.
Bill and his first wife, Mary, had six children which kept him very busy; twin sons named Ronald and Donald born in 1953, Danny in 1954, Christine in 1956, Cheryl in 1962 and Billy Frederick in 1965 was still born. Both Danny and Billy have preceded Bill in death in 1972 and 1965. Bill later married Kathy Kapraun (Mellinger, Trueblood) and they had one daughter, Corrine Elizabeth Mellinger, exactly 34 years to the day after the twins were born.
He is preceded in death by his parents Fred and Sophia Mellinger, first wife Mary, and two sons Danny Ray and Billy Frederick Mellinger.
