Preliminary autopsy results confirm the theory that a Preble County man shot his 3-year-old daughter to death Tuesday before killing himself, authorities say. The county coroner is not expected to officially rule the case a murder-suicide until a meeting scheduled for Monday, said Maj. Wayne Simpson of the Preble County sheriff's office. But he said there's no indication that the deaths of Kelsey Kay Howard and her 39-year-old father, Jeffrey Lee Howard, happened any other way. Sheriff's deputies found their bodies in Mr. Howard's pickup early Tuesday at a southern Preble County nature preserve. They suspect Mr. Howard shot the tiny blonde Monday night or early Tuesday before shooting himself. Kelsey's mother had reported the girl missing Monday, the day after Mr. Howard failed to return her to her Connersville, Ind., home after a visit. Mr. Howard, of West Elkton, Ohio, also had failed to show up for work at the Ford Motor Co. plant in Connersville. The Howards were divorcing and had lost a child in February to SIDS sudden infant death syndrome. Benjamin Jeffrey Howard died Feb. 26 at a baby sitter's, 18 days after his first birthday. A coroner ruled that he died in his sleep of an unknown cause.
