US Army Ranger, Company D, 3rd Battalion, 75th Ranger Regiment, Fort Benning, GA, his unit was taking part in a raid supported by airstrikes from US warplanes and targeting the Islamic State group in Nangarhar province, as part of Operation Freedom's Sentinel. He was an anti-armor specialist, having enlisted in the Army in 2012. He had deployed to Afghanistan three times. His military awards and decorations include the Ranger Tab; Expert Infantryman’s Badge; Parachutist Badge; Joint Service Achievement Medal; Army Achievement Medal; Joint Meritorious Unit Award; Army Good Conduct Medal; National Defense Service Medal; Afghanistan Campaign Medal with Campaign Star; Global War on Terrorism Service Medal; Non-Commissioned Professional Development Ribbon; Army Service Ribbon; and the NATO Medal.

He graduated in 2012 from Fairmont High School, Kettering, OH. He was predeceased by his maternal grandparents, Edward "Ted" Brown Leggat and Annanell "Anne" Leggat. He was survived by his parents and 11 siblings.

Visitation and funeral services to be held in Virginia on May 12 and May 13, 2017.
