Lawrence Bailey Duncan, age 90 of Haymarket, VA, and formerly of Summerfield, FL, and Sykesville, MD, died on Thursday, April 27, 2017 at Adler Center for Caring in Aldie, VA. Born January 3, 1927 in Gettysburg, PA, he was the son of the late Lawrence Duncan and the late Gussie Clayton. He was the husband of the late Betty Lea Duncan who died in 2010.
Larry joined the Merchant Marines at the age of 17 and served from 1942-1946. He had been employed with Bethlehem Steel for 22 years, Eastalco Aluminum plant in Frederick, and then had been a funeral assistant with Haight Funeral Home & Chapel in Sykesville for many years. For many years, he ran the Sykesville Pony League promoting baseball for area youth. Larry was a member of the Freedom District Lions Club in Sykesville and the Belleview Noon Lions Club in Bellview, FL. He had been a member of Flohrville United Methodist Church in Flohrville and Community United Methodist Church in Fruitland Park, FL. Larry was active with the Meals On Wheels program, enjoyed volunteering at the veteran's park in Ocala, FL, and had served as a chaplain at Leesburg Hospital.
Surviving are daughter and son-in-law Juanita and Bryan Waltz of Haymarket, VA, grandchildren Jennifer Heilman and her husband Brent, and Christopher Waltz, and great grandchildren Blake and Avery Heilman, all of Haymarket, VA.
He was predeceased by his daughter, Linda Sue Duncan, who died in December 2016.
The family will receive friends on Sunday, April 30, 2017 from 2-4pm and 6-8pm at Haight Funeral Home & Chapel, 6416 Sykesville Road, Sykesville.
Funeral services will be held on Monday, May 1, 2017 at 1:30 pm at the funeral home. Interment in Springfield Cemetery, Sykesville.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Flohrville United Methodist Church, 6620 Church St., Sykesville, MD 21784, or to the Freedom District Lions Club, P.O. Box 1663, Sykesville, MD 21784.
