Volunteer in Mexican War (per Officers of Virginia Regiment of Volunteers, [Accession # 21057]) .

Residence Morgan County, VA.; 5' 7", fair complexion, blue eyes, light hair; 42 years old.
Enlisted 4/18/1861 at Winchester, VA., he was Commissioned as Captain of Avis' Company "Continental Morgan Guards", 5th Virginia Infantry, on 5/9/1861 at Camp Stevens. (This company subsequently became Company K, 5th Virginia Infantry.)
Dropped 4/17/1862.
Appointed Provost Marshal; Detailed 6/27/1862 Staunton, VA.
Paroled 4/15/1865 Staunton, VA.

(Postwar: Mayor of Charlestown; Justice of the Peace.)

The 5th Infantry Regiment was organized in May, 1861, under Colonel K. Harper. Eight companies were from Augusta County and two from Frederick County. The unit became part of the Stonewall Brigade.
