Leslie "Les" Carter, 73, of rural Flat Rock, died at 11:09 a.m. Saturday, July 4, 2015, in the comfort of his home.
Funeral services were held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, July 8 at Goodwine Funeral Home in Robinson with Ron Price officating. Burial followed in Oak Grove Cemetery in rural Palestine with military rites accorded. Visitation was Tuesday at the funeral home with Masonic rites observed at 7 p.m.
Mr. Carter was born November 30, 1941, in Mt. Erie, the son of Leslie and Ornetta Barnhart Carter. He married Nancy Jo Aten Weger on May 9, 1974. She survives.
Les was a 1960 graduate of Cisne High School in Cisne. He went on to serve his country in the U.S. Army. Back home, he drove a tank truck for a time before becoming Chief of Police in Oblong. He went on to become a patrolman for the Robinson Police Department and deputy for the Crawford County Sheriff's Department before giving up the badge to farm and raise cattle. Away from the farm, he enjoyed drinking coffee and shooting the breeze with anybody and everybody, having never met a stranger. He also enjoyed spending time at the cattle sale barn in Vincennes. He was a member of Oblong Masonic Lodge # 644 and Robinson American Legion Post # 69. He will be remembered for the love he had for his granddaughters.
Les is survived by his wife; a son and daughter-in-law, Jeff and Rachael Weger of Robinson; daughter and son-in-law, Jana and Jason Coonce of Robinson; grandchildren, Marisa Coonce, Lexi Weger, Gracie Weger and Emma Weger; brothers, Floyd and Gerry Carter of Dundas and Ralph Carter of Claremont; brothers-in-law, Dave and Diana Aten, Jess Newbold and Gary Fasig; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his brother, Darrel Carter and his sister, Eleanor Burnett.
