Charles E CAPEL, Age 81 of Oxford died May 2004 in Oxford, Ohio. He was born December 26, 1922 in Troy, NY, the son of Charles and Frances Capel. He married June Arlene Semple September 22, 1945 in Corning, New York.

Dr. Capel was a professor of mathematics and statistics at Miami University for 33 years, retiring in 1993. Dr. Capel received his A.B. from New York State College for Teachers at Albany, M.A. from Rochester University, Rochester, NY and Ph.D. from Tulane University in New Orleans, LA. He taught at the University of Miami in Coral Gables, FL and was a research mathematician at the Westinghouse Research Laboratory in Pittsburgh, PA. He started teaching at Miami University in 1960 and served as chair of the department from 1961 to 1965.

Dr. Capel was a WWII veteran, serving three years in the US Army. He was stationed abroad in France, Germany, Austria, and Belgium, as well as stateside. He was a combat ambulance driver and participated in the Battle of the Bulge.

Dr. Capel is survived by his wife, June; two daughters, Janice Capel Anderson and her husband Mark of Moscow, Idaho and Gail Capel Stephenoff and her husband Mark of Hilliard, Ohio; three grandchildren; two nephews, and one niece. He was a devoted husband, father and grandfather and his family was the joy of his life. He was an avid reader and sports fan and loved to play bridge with his colleagues from the Math Department.

Following cremation, private burial will be in the Miami University section of the Oxford Cemetery. A memorial service is being planned for a later date. Arrangements provided by the Smith & Ogle Funeral Home. Memorial contributions in Dr. Capel's honor may be made to the Alzheimer's Association, 225 N. Michigan Avenue, Suite 1700, Chicago, IL 60601-7633, or to the charity of one's choice.
