Ray, Carl K. Jr.,

A commercial and industrial real estate broker and developer, devoted outdoorsman, ardent environmentalist and avid hunter, died Tuesday. He was 77.

Mr. Ray died at Springhurst Health and Rehab Center after a lengthy illness, surrounded by his wife of 42 years, Ginger, family members and friends.

A lifelong resident of Louisville, Mr. Ray's professional achievements included the development of Holly Springs and Spring Hill Residential Developments, River Green Industrial Park, Old Henry Crossings and the redevelopment of College Industrial Park for which he won a Cornerstone 2020 award. Additionally, Mr. Ray along with others was recognized with the Louisville Historic League award for his preservation work on the Old Male High School. He was also very active and involved with the Home Builders Association of Louisville.

He attended Kentucky Military Institute and the Louisville Country Day School. He also served in the U.S. Air Force and was stationed in London.

Mr. Ray was the son of Carl Ray Sr., the founder and president of a leading landscape company in Louisville. Carl Ray Jr. worked for his father and became a self-made entrepreneur himself, with a keen eye to the power of landscaping.

Always wearing khakis and his signature brimmed hats, he was an influential presence in the outdoor and environmental communities of Louisville. He hunted locally and overseas with his pals, traveling to Hungary, Argentina, Colombia, Canada and throughout the western USA. He loved nothing more than his family, birds, dogs and travel - especially an excursion to Africa.

The devoted husband to Ginger, Carl was the loving father to Laura Murray (Scott) and Sarah Martin (Robert), and adoring grandfather to Cora, Clare and Christine Martin, and Olivia Murray.

Additional survivors include: his brother David (Pam), his sister Sally Lilly (Cooper), his sister in law Jeanie Johnson (Terence Hunt), step brother-in-law Paul Murray (Meredith), mother-in-law Mary Ann Johnson, and his longtime devoted personal assistant, Eileen Nelson-Smith.

Also, nephews Marshall ("Tee") Ray (Toni), Cooper Lilly Jr. (Robin), Parker Lilly (Cecily), David Ray Jr. (Stephanie), Mark Ray (Tracy), nieces Emily Hunt Wormald (Michael), Killey Wescoe (Kyle), Amy Jordan (Shawn), Kathy and Karen Ray and many more.

In addition to his father, Carl was predeceased by half brothers Robert and William Ray.

Private burial services will be held at Cave Hill Cemetery followed by a Memorial Service at 11am Friday at Calvary Episcopal Church, 821 South Fourth Street. Visitation will be from 4-7:30 pm Thursday at Pearson's, 149 Breckenridge Lane.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to Kentucky Lab Rescue, 1101 Sugar Ridge Road, Winchester, Ky. 40391. Bernheim Arboretum and Research Forest, PO Box 130, Clermont, Ky. 40110.
