Reverend Samuel Harbert was born about 1779. He first married Elizabeth PERRY 13 April 1803, in Gloucester, NJ. To this union at least two sons were born: Samuel H. and Abraham "Abel" Herbert and three daughters: Lydia WANAMAKER, Mary OLER and Elizabeth "Betsie" STEELMAN-GUICE. They were the first of Samuel's children to change the name from Harbet/Harbert to Herbert. The name Harbert was the origination of the area called Harbertown situated along Lake Lenape in Mays Landing. Samuel received this 200 acres in 1813 with an indenture made with Col. Richard Westcott Sr. and wife Margaret BRASURE-LEE. The indenture could have been for services to the church but this is not confirmed yet. Samuel Herbert is listed on p. 188 of Heston's Annals as being one of the leaders of the class meetings at the "free church" in Mays Landing.

This 200 acres was originally surveyed to John S(l)tannalan 17 June 1737 and later conveyed to George May in 1751. It passed from George May to Samuel Clements, James Conothers, Richard Mason, Thomas Mason and then Richard Westcoat Sr. in 1778.

Samuel Harbert later married Sophia SMITH, daughter of Elias A SMITH and Hannah LEE 28 Jul 1818 in Gloucester, NJ. To this union, 9 children were born. Hannah L. BROWN, Priscilla CAMPBELL, Elias (Smith), Edward L., William B., David S., Sarah M. GASKILL, Sophia S. COLEMAN and Catharine Ann NOTE.

When Samuel died in 1853, his land was divided between all his children. It runs along Park Road a/k/a Harbert Road. Many of his descendants lived on that street for more than 100 years and there are still some today. As Atlantic county was created from Gloucester county the Herberts have lived in the same area for over 200 years.

It is believed Samuel was the son of Edward Harbert and Priscilla WILEY who married in Gloucester county, NJ on 17 March 1770. Samuel and Sophia SMITH-Harbert's first 4 children are named Hannah L, Priscilla, Elias Smith, and Edward L Harbert. Their children's names match exactly with the names of both their parents.

Inscription

IN
Memory of
REV SAMUEL HARBERT SR
who departed this life on
January 30th 1853
aged 73 years.

Pass a few swiftly-fleeting years,
And all that now in bodies live
Shall quit, like me, the vale of tears,
Their righteous sentence to receive.

But all, before they hence remove,
May mansions for themselves prepare
In that eternal house above;
And, O my God, shall I be there?

(Quote is from Hymn 388 by L.M.
