Mabel Ruth Van Dyke Kempers joined the church triumphant on December 13, 2003 in Holland, Michigan.

She was born to William and Christina (Leusenkamp) Van Dyke on February 7, 1902 in Holland, Michigan. She graduated from Holland High School and with distinction from Hope College in 1924, following which she taught English and French in Big Rapids, Michigan.

In 1925 she married the Rev. Dr. John R. Kempers. They were commissioned that same year by the Board of Missions of the Reformed Church in America to pioneer the evangelization of the people of the state of Chiapas, Mexico, a mission they faithfully and fruitfully carried on for forty-four years. She was an organist, pianist, and teacher of keyboard and choral performance. She taught Bible and language, was a frequent contributor to publications, was instrumental in establishing home visitation programs and was an organizer of women's associations. Her home was often the residence for Bible and church leadership students as well as a warm meeting place for missionary families.

She was a devoted and loving wife, homemaker, and mother of four children. She tutored each child through their primary studies, sending each in turn for secondary education to the United States.

Enjoying a fully active retirement in southern California, she continued a popular devotional speaker and Bible teacher in her association with the Laguna Hills and Leisure World Churches.

She and her husband returned to Holland, Michigan in 1995. Dr. Kempers died that year shortly after they had celebrated seventy years of marriage.

Mrs. Kempers was preceded in death by brothers, Edward T., Dr. H. Milton, and Russell L. VanDyke and sister Lillian C. VanDyke.

Graveside services will be held in Iowa, and a memorial service will be held at a later date in Holland, Mich.

Memorials may be made to the Mabel (Kempers) and Ruth (VanEngen) Young Women's Chiapas Bible School in care of Third Reformed Church of Holland, Mich.

Arrangements are by the Mulder Chapel, Dykstra Funeral Homes, 188 W. 32nd St., Holland and Memorial Funeral Home in Sioux Center, Iowa.
