The family moved to Anderson during the Civil War to escape the bombardment in Charleston as many families did. When Union troops under Gen. Simeon Brown raided Anderson, SC on 1 May 1865 Philip was strung up so as to try and make him tell where the family fortunes were hidden. They ransacked some 25 homes looking for Confederate gold and private goods. Afterward he suffered a brain injury and eventually died of "congestion of brain" after the family moved back to Charleston.∼54 yrs.
