Peter Courtad was born near Strasburg, Alsace, France, October 20, 1811. He was a son of John Peter and Mary Ann Frey Courtad. He emigrated to this country with his parents in 1832, being sixty-three days on the ocean, the ship landing in Baltimore. They lived some time in Pennsylvania, and later came to Seneca County, later moved to Iowa, still later moved back to Seneca County where the father died at the age of sixty-eight in 1848.

Peter was one of the pioneer members of the St. Peter's Church of Upper Sandusky, Ohio and donated to his church a window and a life size statue of his Patron Saint, St. Peter. The statue occupies a niche on St. Joseph's altar.

Peter was married in Seneca County, Ohio, January 20th, 1840, to Catherine Simonis, daughter of John and Mary Simonis, who died Dec. 8th, 1852 and is laid to rest at New Riegel, Ohio. She was the mother of four children. Peter later married on May 10th, 1853 in Seneca County to Clementine Zircher, the daughter of Ignatius and Mary M. (Lehman) Zircher (Zeicher). She was born in 1829 and died Nov. 18th, 1907. He died Sept. 25th, 1891, and they are both laid to rest in the Catholic Cemetery at Upper Sandusky, Ohio. They were the parents of nine children.

He came to Wyandot County in 1864 and purchases a farm of 96 acres four and one-half miles northeast of Upper Sandusky, where he resided until the time of his death.

Peter Courtad, the subject of this sketch, was one of the pioneer members of St. Peter's Church and until the time of his death was closely allied with the welfare of St. Peter's congregation. Two acts showing his generosity to the Church will bear mentioning here, via: the donation of a Church window and a life size statue of his Patron Saint, St. Peter. The mentioned statue occupies a niche on St. Joseph's altar. He was born near Strasburg alsace, France, October 20th, 1811. He was buried with honors in the Catholic cemetery.

The fruits of his second marriage were nine children, two died in infancy and Francis A.; in his twenty-fourth year. Those living are: John; Joseph A.; Mrs. Elizabeth Greth; August J.; Martin J.; and Mrs. Magdalena Phal. His wife Clementine is still living on the home farm with her son Martin J., who is managing the place at the present time, January, 1902.
