Mattie Lee Smith, 84, of Marks, died on Tuesday, October 22,1996, at Northwest Mississippi Regional Medical Center in Clarksdale. Services were on Tuesday, October 29, at 1:00 p.m. at New Belmount Baptist Church in Marks with burial in Belmount Cemetery. The Rev. Nathaniel Christian officiated and Delta Burial handled the arrangements.
Mrs. Smith, a retired housewife, was born on August 28, 1912, in Claiborne County. She received a general education degree from Coahoma Junior College and was a member of the Heroines of Jericho in Marks. She also received the senior citizen's award from Swan Lake Association.
Mrs. Smith was a member of the choir, superintendent of the Sunday School, secretary of the Missionary Society, member of the Mother's Board, and a Sunday School treasurer at New Belmount Baptist Church in Marks.
Survivors include her husband, Chambers Smith, of Marks; eight sons, James Smith, Belmon Smith, Charlie Smith, Dean Smith, and Chambers Smith, Jr., all of Santa Ana, CA; Thomas Smith of Hernando, Richard Smith of Marks, and Rodney Smith of Memphis; two daughters, Ruth Griffin of East St. Louis, IL, and Annie Lee Lewis of Santa Ana, CA; 39 grandchildren, 69 great-grandchildren, and 13 great-great-grandchildren.
