Edward Allen Tanner.
President of Illinois College from 1882 to 1892.
Library dedicated to his memory and the browsing room is dedicated to the memory of his wife, Marion Brown Tanner.

Son of Deacon and Mrs. Joseph A. Tanner.
Edward Tanner was the first child to be born in Waverly.
Orphaned at the age of six, he was raised by his cousin and guardian, Dr. J. M. Sturtevant.

Graduated Illinois College in 1857. He taught a year at Franklin, and then two years at the Waverly Academy.

He married Marion Brown, daughter of Dr. I. H. Brown of Waverly, on June 26, 1861 in Morgan County.

In 1861, he accepted a position as professor of Latin at the Pacific University of Oregon. He remained there four years, while teaching he also studied Theology and received his license as a Congregational Minister. He returned to Illinois College and taught Latin. In the spring of 1882, he was appointed President of Illinois College.
