Willma Boyd Potter - Jan. 31, 1927 — Sept. 5, 2006
Lifetime Ouray resident Willma Boyd Potter, died early Tuesday morning, Sept. 5, at St. Mary's Hospital & Medical Center in Grand Junction at age 79.
Visitation for family and friends is scheduled Friday, Sept. 8, from 4-7 p.m. at Crippin Funeral Home Chapel in Montrose.
A funeral service in celebration of Willma's life will be officiated by Chaplain Don Barr at 11 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 9, at the First Baptist Church in Ouray. Graveside services will follow in the Cedar Hill Cemetery at Ouray.
Born on Jan. 31, 1927, in Cory, Colo., Willma Boyd was the daughter of Ralph E. Boyd and Iris (Kennicott) Boyd. Willma was a year old when she moved with her family to Ouray. She graduated from Ouray High School as valedictorian of her class.
Following high school, Willma was the first female employee hired at Citizens State Bank in Ouray, where she worked for some time. Her grandfather helped initiate the start of the bank.
On Dec. 6, 1945, Willma was united in marriage with Jack Potter in Gunnison. Jack preceded Willma in death on Aug. 13, 1994, in Ridgway.
She was a member of the Cattlemen's Association and the Ouray County Historical Society. Willma was very proud of being a rancher, raising cattle and took pride in the preservation of agriculture. Her time spent with her family was special and being involved in 4-H with her children, but more so with her grandchildren. Her cats and dogs were a great joy in her life.
Surviving family members who were honored to share Willma's life include her children: Henry Potter and wife Glennda, Melissa Marie and husband Walter Head, Michael Boyd Potter, Christine and husband Ed Witherspoon, and Jennie and husband Stan Knoll, all of Ridgway; and eight grandchildren, Trenton Potter, Jodie Head, Bobbie Lou Klabon, Tobie Head, Willma Jo Fields, Jackie Witherspoon, Eddie Lynn Witherspoon and Jessica Knoll; and four great-grandchildren, Cowboy Troi Klabon, Merissa Marie Klabon, Butch Klabon and Victoria Fields.
Willma was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Jack Potter; two brothers, Donald and Kirk Boyd; and one sister, Minnie Bell Popish.
